How To Pick the Right Paint Color!

1. Pick a general color!
Once you decide on the general color you’d like to paint your room, collect up to 10 different sample shades of that color at your local paint store. For example, if you know you want grey walls, collect all different shades of grey paint samples. If you like it, grab it! A paint color you’re iffy about in the store could turn out beautiful in your home.
2. Narrow it down!
After careful consideration and probably too much obsessing over your paint samples, narrow them down to your few top favorites. If you don’t mind spending a little extra cash, you can purchase sample sizes of your favorite samples to paint swatches – this will give you a better feel for the color. If you don’t want to spend the extra money, taping the paint chips onto your wall works fine too!
3. Time to paint (kinda)!
Paint a swatch of each sample onto a white piece of paper, leaving a white border around the edges (this prevents your current wall color from affecting the shade of your paint samples). If you did not purchase sample paints, tape your sample paint chips onto your wall! Be sure to tape the samples or hang the painted papers next to your dominant design elements (i.e. counter tops, trim, and furniture) to make sure the paint works well with your current furnishings.
4. This step is most important!
Make sure you look at your paint samples at ALL different times of the day. You may love the way a paint color looks when the morning sun hits it, but find that it looks dull and dingy once the sunsets.
5. Give yourself time!
Choosing a paint color is a big – and stressful – decision! Paint tremendously changes the look of your room; you want to be 100% certain of your new and improved wall color. Don’t be afraid to sit on it for a few days to make sure you love your new paint color.
6. Get to work!
After you’ve carefully chosen your most loved paint color, it’s time to get painting and transform your room. Happy painting!
